Sluggish performance switching windows

I am experiencing sluggish performance when switching
from one task window to another. The problem is
especially pronounced when I switch from one Word
document to another (Word 2002) and when switching from
an email message to Outlook Express (v.6). I am using
WindowsXP Home. Is this a common pronblem? Does anyone
have a solution?
