View Full Version : Reading a DVD-RAM disk with Windows XP

I recently acquired a DVD recorder, and have taped part of a television
program that I want to save. I recorded it on a DVD-RAM. I read in my
recorder manual that other machines can't read -RAM disks. Is there any way I
can read this disk on my computer? I'd like to save the program and then
transfer it to a DVD-R. Right now it's not being recognized when I put it in
my DVD/CD-RW combo drive (I have WinDVD and Interactual Player, and movies
play fine on my computer).

No, unless your PC is equipped with a DVD-ram drive you cannot
read it in a standard DVD/CD-RW drive.

The Standalone DVD recorder that you used to record the TV show
to DVD-RAM, does that have an in-built HD? If so you could copy
the Contents back to the units hard drive, and then reburn it to DVD-R
and then transfer it to your PC.

You will need an optical drive that can read DVD Ram disks.
They're not the easiest of things to find these days... most newer Toshiba
notebooks have drives that can read and write to DVD-RAM... and you'll find
most Panasonic drivers can (because it's their invention)
From newegg.com, a list of drives which they state can read/write DVD-RAM:

A couple of alternatives, though quality will suffer......
If you have a Camcorder equipped with firewire,
You could connect the camcorder to the DVD-recorder
and copy contents to DV tape, then either copy it back
to the standalone DVD-recorder using DVD-R, or
copy via firewire to PC
You can of course copy to VHS, the copy back to DVD-R.

hi
i had the same problem and found a way round it, i used a drd-rw disc in my
dvd recoder and formatted it in VR mode, then when it was finished i was able
to put it in my pc and transfer the footage, the best program to use is one
made by a company called TNMPG or something like that, try a google searc.
