View Full Version : Windows XP is running slowly

I am having problems with windows XP, but I think it
might be a hardware issue too. I am running an AMD
athalon XP 2000+ on a SOYO KT-333 Motherboard. I have 3
256 MB sticks of PC2700 DDR for memory. Windows runs
fine right after I clear my CMOS and re-input all my
settings. Windows starts right up and programs start
right up. It runs fine for a couple restarts, and then
it starts to run really slow, and I mean really slow. It
takes about 10 seconds for my start menu to come up. It
is a new computer, so I have been doing a lot of restarts
due to installs. However, when I can't stand it anymore,
I open the case and clear the CMOS and then it runs
fine. What could I be doing wrong? I am really at a
loss.

Make sure you have the latest drivers.
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)
This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:

I have run a virus scan, installed adaware, defragged my
hard drive and updated all my drivers and I am still
having the same problem. Last night when I went to bed I
shut the computer down and switched off the power supply
and let them stay off overnight. This morning, on my
first boot-up, the thing ran great and windows ran
without delay. After I restarted once or twice, it
started to run unbelievably slow again. It runs like I
have a million programs open when I am only running one
(or none). Everything I do takes forever and I am very
frustrated. Again, if I clear my CMOS and reset my BIOS
settings everytime I start it up, it runs fine, but I
don't want to have to open the case every time I turn on
the computer.

Did it happen right from the start?
Or was it a while after you had the computer?
Try taking out two of the three memory sticks, then swap out memory
stick.
Clear CMOS and see if problem reappears.
Try disconnecting all peripherals, clearing CMOS and then see if
problem reappears.
