msconfig startup tab

I love Microsoft and XP. I have XP Home with all updates. I had a problem with a new ISP cable connection. Finally I went to msconfig startup tab, deleted all items and then reinstated them one at a time. I finally found two that caused the problem. Now I would like to remove them from those items on the startup tab so I can return to a normal boot. I have tried several recommendations to no avail, i.e. not in the startup directory, taskbar, etc... Any help would be appreciated.

Franklin;
Go to the applications themselves.
There is normally an option within their own settings about Start-up.
This is the preferred way anyways.
The Start-up tab is intended for troubleshooting and other short term
uses.
