I have the option to upgrade my bios on my Aopen
motherboard. It has some fixes and a few new features.I
know bios updates are not as simple as windows updates.I
guess what I am looking for is a little advice from the
knowledgeable people in this forum. When is the right
time to do a bios upgrade?I have a decent system but am
always looking for some new features or extra little
somethings. Thank you

Yes... indeed.
Usually worth doing.
Mine is a different board, from a different maker, but the routines are
probably similar.
Have a diskette ready to use. Label it. The installation procedure will
likely begin with the download. It will most likely prompt you through the
disk insertion, and probably format it for you, then copy the flash files
over, and instruct you to reboot. Make sure you've set your boot sequence
to look for a floppy disk first, in BIOS, if you haven't already got it that
way. Often store bought systems will seek a CD, or hard drive first. If
that happens, you won't get the update installed, because the system will
have booted with your hard drive's OS.
Good luck,

I have done BIOS upgrades approximately 15 times over the
last 8 years without a problem, until two months ago and
I finally had one wiped out the BIOS, I would have to get
a new pre-burned chip from the board manufacture that
thing wouldn't even boot to a floppy. I thought it was
time to upgrade anyway so I bought a new MB and processor
instead. But I still had to upgrade the BIOS on the new
board because a lot of time the BIOS are out of date when
you get the boards. The new one had a windows utility
that came with it and it ran in XP, went out found new
BIOS and asked me if I wanted to upgrade and since I was
having intermittent hard lockups with the new board I had
to go for it again and it worked fine and fixed my lockup
problems. Therefore, I guess my point is I will only do a
BIOS upgrade if I have researched it and there is a fix
for something that is causing me problems. If there are
upgrades to parts of the board I don't use or mine is
working fine I don't bother anymore.

The right time for a BIOS update is when it will solve a problem for you.
Don't just do it for some new features you might not use. A bad update will
turn your PC into a pile of junk. Having said that a BIOS update is fairly
easy to do. I have a Aopen motherboard and the BIOS update is done easily
through windows. Just follow their directions if you insist on doing it.
