View Full Version : Getting more Info when browsing files

Nigth Stalker

Hey people i have a question, i want to get more info when im browsing my
hard drive, especially when wanting to see how much files and how big a
folder is,

like adding a column in "Details" View, printing the info in the Status Bar,
or even better, getting the info like whe see it when viewing a non-folder
item ( *.rar, *.exe, ... ) in "Tiles" View ( under folder name, grayed-out,
usually filetype and size/dimensions ( dim [x.y] when it's a pic ).
I would prefer to tweak this with the RegEdit-or, but avoiding background
running apps (services) or even programs that set it; A Do-It-Yourself thing
'ya see ;D.
It would be really cool if someone could explain/tell me how/if this is
possible and how to do it.

THANKS !

And instead - you can set that in, say, My Documents, and while you're there
you can open Tools > Options > View > and select Apply to All folders.

Read carefully the original post, i know how to add/remove columns in
Detailed View. I'll explain what i am attempting to get in a very detailed
way ( i've been playing with a PC mouse since i was 3yrs old, please don't
consider me as a "n00b" ) :::

Do This ! -> Open a FOLDER ( i'll call this one F1 ), any, create one on
your desktop or whatever, and then IN >F1< folder, create an OTHER FOLDER (
Called F2 ), so you should get something like this %f1LOCATIONPATH%\F1\F2 <<<
OKAY ? Got it ? Easy hey !
Now in F1 CREATE a NON-folder item, ie: RightC>New>Bitmap Image, you should
now have, in F1 !, 2 items, FOLDER F2 and New Bitmap Image.
After these steps, RightC>VIEW>TILES !, you should now have a Tiles view of
F2 and New Bitmap Image, now LOOK at that bmp file, UNDER the FILE NAME ( New
Bitmap Image ) you should see INFORMATIONS ABOUT THAT FILE ( if .bmp file,
"Bitmap Image" gray-ish color )
AND NOW -LOOK- at F2, you should ONLY see the file name.

OKAY now this is the REALLY EXTREMLY UBER COMPLICATED NO-ONE-UNDERSTANDS
THING ::: See that gray info under the bmp file name ? well i want info about
FOLDERS to be shown like that ! got it ??? =D i hope !

And 2nd -(you got mixed up on this), switch to DETAILS VIEW, you should see
a few colums, usually Name, Size, Type and Date Modified. I know when can add
columns in that view, but i want one that shows SIZE of FOLDERS ( new column
or modded Size column ) and a CUSTOM File Count column for FOLDER CONTENT
COUNT. < These aren't shown when RightC'ing on the colums ! i want to CREATE
them !

Okay and last of all, you see that gray 1cm bar at the bottom of the window
? ( if not, View>Status Bar ), well click on the bmp file, it should show
information about the file ( usually Type and Size ).
Now click on the Folder, and it should show "1 Object Selected".
I want the information that is given for the bmp file to be given for the
FOLDER also ! ( instead of type, it could show the file count, cuz whe all
know what filetype is a folder don't whe ? :P )... THATS ABOUT IT :D
Now if you didn't understand this, i very sorry for you :C
BTW1: when i write in UPPERCASE, it doesn't mean in screaming, it is just to
highlight words, so don't feel attacked by my post.
BTW2: What is MVP ? Microsoft V...... Person ? Microsoft Verified Personel
????

THANKS!

To add a column for folder size to detail view, see here:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/foldersize.htm

Not sure how to get the info into a tile view though, possibly in a similar way as printers do:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Printers]
"TileInfo"="prop:{FE9E4C12-AACB-4aa3-966D-91A29E6128B5}1;{FE9E4C12-AACB-4aa3-966D-91A29E6128B5}2"
"Details"="prop:Name;{FE9E4C12-AACB-4aa3-966D-91A29E6128B5}1;{FE9E4C12-AACB-4aa3-966D-91A29E6128B5}2
;DocComments;{FE9E4C12-AACB-4aa3-966D-91A29E6128B5}4;{FE9E4C12-AACB-4aa3-966D-91A29E6128B5}5"
"InfoTip"="prop:{FE9E4C12-AACB-4aa3-966D-91A29E6128B5}2;{FE9E4C12-AACB-4aa3-966D-91A29E6128B5}1;{FE9
E4C12-AACB-4aa3-966D-91A29E6128B5}4"

but using the CLSID of the ColumnHandler provided by one of the add-ons listed in the above link.

Thanks, got the Folder Size in Detailed view, not really what i wanted but it
will do. (+Mod the "Size" , +++++ in status bar, +++ in Tiles view [+ is
preferance, "Folder Size" is the nominal value (-/+ , 0 )]
Also I looked up the prop: thing and it sounds cool, but when i put in
regedit, a String called Details with
"prop:Name;Size;Write;AllocSize;Acces;Create;Conten t;Path;..." ( tried them
all ) it only shows in Details panel ( left side ) the Name and the Time the
folder was created, and nothing else :C
Any idea why ???

Just hover the mouse over the folder, it will tell you.

Hello Nigth,
Details view is the answer.
Just right click on column head Name or any other, and tick details you want
to see.
But to see them all you will have to have very large working area (display).
