I purcahsed a Compaq Presario preloaded with WXP almost 2
years ago. I tried to use the recovery disk sent with the
computer, and it keeps saying that it's Starting Windows
98", then I get a disk error message and to contact their
techincal support.

I asked why WXP is looking for W98 on my puter, and they
told me that WXP doesn't have it's own real mode drivers
and uses those from W98. That's why my disk isn't
working. Are they giving me a line to force me to get a
new "free" recovery disk that will cost $10 in shipping
for something that will only cost them $2 at the most to
ship?

To me it sounds like they either did something illegal,
like loading XP over 98, or someone there screwed up and
put the wrong disk in with my puter.

I've seen many Recovery CD's that start with older operating systems. So
that's not unusual. It does sound like you might have a bad Recovery CD or
perhaps a problem with the CD-Rom drive itself.
