Stand by Disabled

I'm running XP on a desktop computer. I've not made any recent OS or
driver changes. I just recently noticed I am unable to put the
computer into Standby mode. I used to click START, Turn off Computer,
and then standby but now standby is greyed out. I frequently used
the standby mode in the past but as I say, it's now disabled. The
keyboad also has a standby button but it doesn't work either.

How do I re-enable it?
