Did it ever "acknowledge" disks?
Or has this problem recently occurred with disks that
were once "acknowledged" but now are not?
You need to give us a few clues......................

Yes it did acknowledge disks, and for some reason, all of a sudden, no disks

Is it detected in device manager?
Any error messages?
Any change you can make a correlation with the problem occurring?
Any other problems?
Is it a media player issue?
Are D: drive/disks revealed via Windows explorer/My Computer etc?
Have you tried system restore?

Try this,
Place a music CD into D: drive
double click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.
Listed should be your drives, is D drive listed?
If so, is it listed as having content?

This link is to the Microsoft knowledge database, and an
article on how to use the invaluable System restore feature.

The system restore did not work, any other ideas to why it won't read the
disks?

The laser may have died inside the optical drive.... replace it.
