VERY slow opening new appls

I have a 1.8GHz PC with 256K RAM running XP Home. It
frequently takes 2 or 3 MINS. to open new appls. I've
noticed in Task Manager an image called "System" with
user "SYSTEM" which occupies about 256K of memory and can
sit at 99% CPU for minutes at a time. Any suggestions
please?

or which antivirus ?
