I've been having trouble opening the volume control at
the bottom right corner of my taskbar. On double clicking
the icon, a window is displayed with the title 'File
Download' with the information-
Some files can harm your computer. If the file
imformation below looks suspicious, or you do not fully
trust the source, do not open or save this file.
File name:
File type: Application
From:
This type of file could harm your computer if it contains
malicious code.
Would you like to open the file or save it to your
computer?
I then have the option of opening, cancelling or getting
more information.
On clicking open, the volume control icon appears on the
taskbar, however the window for the volume panel is not
visible. I've tried to move, minimize, maximise and
restore the window but nothing causes the window to
appear.
I hope someone can help me rectify this problem-I'd be
really grateful for any responses.

First, go to Classic Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices. Uncheck the
box " Place Volume Icon in Task Bar".
Click Apply>OK. Restart and then go back and recheck the same box. See
what happens. If that doesn't work then
Rt click MyComputer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager. Scroll down to
Sound, Video and game controllers
click on the + sign and look for any yellow or red marks. If there are
any you have to update your audio drivers.

Thanks very much for your response, unfortunately the
control panel method didn't work and I'm still getting
the file download message. Also, when I looked for any
yellow and red marks there were non present.

Claire, try a System File Check. Go to Start>Run type: sfc /scannow
Have your WinXP cd in the drive.
