View Full Version : Icons not visible in WinExpl

System: Windows XP Pro SP2
--------------------------
I have a Data Folder full of Icons which normally displays a miniature
replica of each icon.
The Folder is set to Icon View so that I can pick and choose easily.
Even in Details View, the different icons can still be distinguished.

For some unknown reason, the icons have all been changed to the
first icon upper right in system32\SHELL32.dll.
The icons themselves are not corrupted because when I tried some of them
randomly on New Folders, the folders displayed the relative customised icon.
I can even edit them in Snagit. It is the display in Windows Explorer that has
been changed.

I checked what I have done in the past 1-2 hours, but could not come
up with a solution. Reluctantly, I restored my system to the first RP of
this morning.
Everything was restored back except the icon view. I tried searching for
similar problems in this Forum, but could not come up with a workable
solution.

What part of the System Registry makes icons visible in Windows Explorer?

poltonis,

Does this issue occur even for folders containing the pictures, as enabling
thumnail view also displays a small replica of the picture for all the
picture file?

Good question Jason: I checked other Folders containing pictures etc.
They are correctly displayed when accessed in Thumbnails or Filmstrip.
Thanks for replying: if you have some more clues, I will keep an eye on this
post.

OK, just found the solution. In case someone else has the problem....
Open the Icon Folder/from the Menu choose Tools/Folder Options/File Types.
Scroll down to ICO, highlight it, and right-click/New/Advanced. In the box
"File extension, I put .ico and in the Associated File Type, scrolled down
to "icon" and clicked OK.
All the icons in my folder wee visible again.
