I've just upgraded my notebook from Windows ME to Windows
XP Pro. I noticed some performance problems and I noted
that about 190 out of 256 MB of ram was being used on
start up. After shutting all of the animations and some
uneccessary processes in the services.msc file, I've
freed about 40 MB of RAM. Other than the OS, the only
programs I have running in the background are McAfee's
Virus Scan, the manager program for my touch-pad, Real
Player and the Adaptec CD creator. Other than that the
rest is being used by the OS. As the minimum
requirements for the OS are 64 MB of RAM, why is XP using
all of the memory? Is there any further way to reduce
the amount memory being used? Are there any memory
management programs that work well with XP?
I've noticed that a fair bit of the memory is used by
network services. As I only use my network for moving
files and printing, can I set up two start up profiles,
one without all of the network stuff, and another one for
when I need to connect?
Thanks,
