Disk Space

I am trying to free up disk space using Disk Cleanup from
the control panel maintainence. When I hit disk cleanup
the box shows up and says scanning compressed files. 3
bars light up but then no action. The computer doesn't
freeze, it just doesn't complete the task.

Any suggestions, your help is appreciated
