View Full Version : Is there a direct link to SP2 patch files?

Peter B. Steiger
February 25th 06, 01:16 AM
It's about time for yet another security update, so I went over to the
microsoft.com downloads page. I click on the "download SP2 now" link...
and it tries to install and run Windows Update. In fact, half the
options I click on take me to Windows Update.

I don't want the automatic update. I don't need it. I want one entity in
charge of deciding what files get placed on my computer, particularly my
operating system, and while there may be some question of that entity's
intelligence or sanity, it's sure not gonna be some program from Redmond
that forces itself on me.

So. Is there anyplace I can download the actual patch files as
self-contained EXE/ZIP/whatever so I can launch them at my own discretion,
or am I locked into installing and running the update behemoth just to get
the security patches?

(ps, added later) I did find some path to an "administrator center" that
lets you download a big honkin' 256MB patch so you can roll out your own
update on multiple platforms. Well, at least I can download it without
Windows Update... sigh.

KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe downloaded from here...

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals
and Developers
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en

is the XP SP2 self-extracting installer file and 266.0 MB is as small as it
gets.

The XP SP2 CD is 475MB.

Frustrated in Greeley. ;-)

Why is the cdrom 475 mb though and the download version is only 266?
Compression of the installer, or does the CD include other stuff as well?

Individual updates can be downloaded in a number of different
ways.

Method 1.
How to download updates and drivers from the Windows Update
Catalog
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;323166

Start at this web site:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp

Click "Find updates for Windows operating systems".
Scroll through the list to the next to last entry, Windows XP
SP2.
Hit the Search button.
Click on "Critical Updates and Service Packs" and pick out the
updates you want to install. Add them to your Download Basket.
Do the same for "Recommended Updates".
Once you're done selecting updates, click on "Go to Download
Basket".
You can now download the updates to your system and install
them at your convenience.

Method 2.

Microsoft Security Bulletin Search
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx

You can search by XP version and service pack number to find
the appropriate updates.

Good luck

Windows XP Service Pack 2 complete download:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

There are 26 or so additional critical updates that have been issued
since Service Pack 2 was released. You will have to download these
separately and install them if you do not wish to use Microsoft Update
or Windows Update.

Because of the risks involved in using a system that is not being kept
fully up to date with security patches I think you should reconsider
your position with regard to the automatic updates.

There are 3 options that you can configure the automatic update to
use:

1. Automatically download and install all critical updates when they
are made available.

2. Automatically download but do not install critical updates when
they are made available, and provide notification that the updates are
ready to be installed.

3. Do not download critical updates, but provide notification that
updates are available for manual download and installation.

One additional point. You can create a new Windows XP installation
CD with Service Pack 2 slipstreamed into it, and there are a number of
methods of doing so. If you use nLite (free from
http://www,nliteos.com) then you can also incorporate any or all of
the post SP2 updates into the disk as well, provided you have
downloaded these and have them available on your hard drive.

Good luck
