The error happens when ever I go to control pannels and
click on desktop or if I right click on the desktop and go
to properties.

It reads:
The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32\desk.cpl is not
a valid Windows image. Please check this against your
installation diskette.

What do I do so that I can change my desktop properties?

Couple of possibilities. First, insert your installation in a CD drive.

Start a command prompt (start->run->cmd [enter]) then run SFC with the
/scannow option (sfc /scannow [enter])

Or, start->run->msconfig [enter]. Hit the expand file button. In the top
window, browse to the desk.cpl file, in the middle box, select your OS
installation media. Hit the expand button.
