FIREWIRE SPEED PROBLEMS

[JC IN Q8]

Grateful for help. Just purchased a Sony HC 42 (Mini DV). Had to buy a
Firewire and USB 2 Combo as laptop was USB 1. For some reason, capturing
Video using Movie Maker and Firewire seems to take the same time as the
lenght of the original shot footage. i.e. 48 minutes rcoreded on the camera
seems to take about the same time to transfer to Movie Maker ready to edit.
I this normal. I thought the whoel point bout Firewire was the trasnfer rate
an quality cmpared with USB 2. Sorry is this is such a novice post...I was
so excited with the new camer and now I am just confused! Would apprecite
any advice...JC

Capture is ALWAYS in real time. 1 hour of video will take 1 hour to
capture. It doesn't matter what software you capture with, it's always
going to take 'real time'.

Cari, Thanks for the response...now I feel a bit stupid even posing the
question but to be honest, I thought that the combination of the Camcorder
using Firewire to WMM would somehow operate in quick time. Thanks for
setting me stright.

So is there any real advantage in using Firewire over USB 2 to perform the
capture if they both take the same time?

I'm not a Firewire expert but it is my understanding that Firewire is less dependent on system resources and it can guarantee a connection fast enough to transfer the video without dropping any frames. On the other hand, USB is more dependent on the system components, such as the processor, and it cannot guarantee to establish or maintain a specific speed. The result can be dropped frames if the system is to busy to process the incoming video stream.
