I upgraded Microsoft Me with windows XP. After the
upgrade I was unable to locate some of the old files.
Example: Old Win MX files.
I am not very computer savvy.
Can a computer be reset to old settings prior to the
upgrade? Will it make a difference.
If I reinstall Me will it make a difference?
My original reason for installing XP, I was unable to
install Qick Books Pro 2003 because it was unable to
locate Internet Browser 6.1.
Thank you,

Personally, i wouldn't have recommended an upgrade to XP over Me, 2
different technologies here.. Since you have alredy done that, i would NOT
re-install ME over XP... There may be a way to retrieve those 'lost' files
you speak about, but since the time to do that would have been before you
upgraded, i don't know, tho' someone on here might.. Be patient, someone may
have a solution....
You readily admit to not being computer savvy, so it amazes me that you
would go ahead blindly, but i guess we all have done that at one time or
another... Frankly, if you have a full install disc of Windows XP, (not the
upgrade) I would do a clean install of XP after formatting the HD and
clearing all that crap from Me off the HD. You may have lost those files
from your Me install, but you will have far fewer problems with a clean
install than any upgrade can provide..

Peter, you seem to be perpetuating the old myth that there's a difference
(codewise) between an UPGRADE version verses a FULL version of Windows. I
consistently proved with Windows 98SE that the UPGRADE disk will clean
install to a newly formatted hard drive and be operationally
indistinguishable from a setup using a FULL version CD. The only drawback to
the UPGRADE is that you have to help the installer "find" your existing
Windows installation to verify that you are eligible for the upgrade. With
98SE, you simply had to "show" the installer your old version install CD at
the appropriate time. You could also show it a copied folder on another
harddrive or partion.
I haven't proven this with XP because I don't have an upgrade version but I
can't see why there'd be any difference. The Activation requirement may
cause some complication, but I doubt it.
What people are really trying to do when they fall victim to this myth is do
a "Clean" install without carrying all the old baggage (registry settings,
etc) of an old operating system. This is certainly one way to ensure a
proper installation and the FULL version CD does this in a straightforward
way.
But if you are legitimately entitled to the UPGRADE price, there's no reason
to pay extra for the license, because the price (and the license it
purchases) is the only significant difference. --Ron R
