Just spent 2 days looking into a problem with a Sony Vaio
laptop that would completely lockup after 20 minutes
inactivity. Initial thought were power or heat problems.

After numerous complete wipes and rebuilds from the
original Sony CD's and installing apps one at a time,
rebooting, leaving it for 30 minutes inactivity to see if
it would still lockup - I eventually found out that it had
nothing to do with the laptop, office xp, xp service pack
1, nortons anti virus 2003 and was infact a problem with
one of the 27 critical updates (36mb) that I apply at the
end of the rebuild.

At this point I lost the will to live and rebuilt minus
the critical updates, switched off the automatic download
and application of windows updates. After a period of soak
testing and inactivity testing the laptop was deemed fit
for service.

Thanks Eric for posting the solution to your problem. Damn MS updates.
