Windows Update Service Is Not Available ?

I noticed that recently I have not received any
notifications of updates being available & checked the
settings in My Computer under the Automatic Updates tab.

I'm unable to click on anything under this tab & a
message states that

"The Windows Update Service is unavailable"

Anyone know how to fix this? Web searches so far show
nothing.
