My sound theme stopped working on windows XP Home
edition. When the computer starts up & shuts down, the
sounds do not play. The sounds are still there when I
check sounds in control panel, and the theme is still
selected, they just don't play. This has not affected
sounds in other programs, they work fine. Any suggestions?

I have tried these suggestions, but they do nothing:

#1. Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_USERS. If it doesn't have a Data entry in the right
pane that reads: (value not set), double click (Default)
and delete it.
If it does, check your HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 keys for the
same.

When I tried this suggestion, there is no data entry in
the right pane that reads "value not set", but when I
double click default, I get an edit string panel
with "value name" & "value data", both which are blank,
but I do not get a choice for deleting it. If I right
click on "default", I get a choice for modifying or
deleting, but it can't be deleted!

#2. In Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel select the
Sound Tab. In sound schemes switch back from Win Default
to No Sound and back. Then select Apply. See what happens.

This did nothing. Still no sound theme.
