My DVD/CD-RW Drive (D:) does not detect blank dvds but I have no problems
playing a dvd movie or all forms of cds but whenever a blank dvd is put into
the drive it does not register on the system any at all. I have tried to read
the blank dvds using Nero 6 disc information but it tells me there is no disc
in the drive. I would like to use Nero Express Vision to burn slide shows
onto dvds so Can anyone tell me why the drive is acting this way?
My system information is:
Windows XP Professional version 2002 Service Pack 2
Manufacture and supported by:
iQon Technologies
Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.80GHz
2.79 GHz 448 MB of Ram.

Yes it is a - drive and the discs I am using are DVD-RW and DVD-R so I'm lost
as to what the problem could be

The off the cuff answer would be that the drive does not work with the brand
of DVD blank you are using.

I don't think that is the problem because I have tried 4 different brands of
DVD-R/RW. If you have another suggestion I would welcome it.

If you have posted it correctly - "DVD/CD-RW" drive,
then it is a CD writer only, that also *reads* DVD-roms

Could you break that down for me please?
Are you saying I can only burn stuff on to a CD and play DVDs but the drive
will not recognise the presence of a DVD if it is blank?
If this is so why does it recognise a used DVD but registers the blank one
as if the drive is empty?

Two possibilties:
These were early generation burners.
They are CD burners with laser mech that can focus to *read*
DVD's, but read them only!
And just like your standalone DVD player attached to your TV
It can read a DVD that has a TOC (table of contents), But just
like your DVD player connected to your TV, it cannot burn to
blank DVD disks.
OR.
If you are 100% confident that your original description as:
"DVD/CD-RW" was a mistake and your drive is definately:
"DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW", and that you have tried other brands
of DVD-R and had success, then it will be a firmware issue.
Firmware is a code to instruct a drive how to "behave", the
most common reason to update a drives firmware is to........
Ensure compatibilty with the ever increasing range of differently
pressed blank media..........
Post back if you are absolutely, 100% certain that your drive is
a "DVD-R/RW/CD-RW" model,
I'll then post how to identify the make and model,
where to get the firmware, and how to "flash" the drive!

Thanks for your help so far.
The information taken from the disc drive properties under the harware tab is
Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-352N, DVD/CD-ROM
and the info. in the MY Computer folder shows the drive in question a
DVD/CD-RW Drive (D:)

Alas Lady A, it is NOT a dvd burner, it can only *read*
finalised (TOC) dvd disks. A blank ("empty") dvd is just
as likely to be a coaster as far as the drive is concerned.
You have a CD burner/player and a DVD player drive.
Multi format DVD burners are very affordable these days -
You should consider installing one, it is very easy.

Hello decoder!!! I'm having the same problem. I can't burn DVDs. I tried
everything, and notihng fix the problem. My hardware is a Pioneer DVD -R/RW.
This is the especification of my laptop: Equium A60-692 P4 518/ XP HE/ 256MB/
40GB/ 15TFT/ DVD-R/ RW.
I got some DVDs that I'd burned on the past with the same hardware. I can
open them without any problem. But I'm trying to burn newones now and it's
not working.
What can i do?
I would really apreciate any help.
thanks
