View Full Version : DVD movies will not play
BigFatGoalie
March 12th 06, 04:32 PM
Hi folks, the below is my spec that a friend of mine built for me in November last year, the problem is that i cannot get DVd films to play on my new system. DVD discs are recognised but will not play through Power DVD,WMP, Real Player etc. I have numerous DVD Disc games installed so it is nothing to do with the drive or anything.
Spec:
AMD Sempron 2800+
Abit KU8 Motherboard
Seagate 80GB Sata HDD
2x512 Kingston Memory
400W Power Supply
PNY 6600GT 128mb graphics card
LG 16X CD-RW/DVD-ROM
I have tried installing all sorts of codecs and decoders but nothing has worked yet. As far as i am aware, i have no conflicting drivers installed causing this problem, i suppose i could say the only video drivers i have got installed is my NVIDIA graphics drivers.
The DVD gets recognised and goes to WMP etc, but when i hit play the system becomes unstable and does not play the video. This also happens with streaming and videos on putfile etc.
I would be very grateful if someone could help me here, it's really starting to bug me .

You can get to the stage where you simply have too many codecs installed....
Use the DVD decoder check up utility to find out what is really installed on
your system... and whether or not it's compatible.

Jerry and Cari,
Thank you for you response. I have used the Decoder Checker and indedd i didn't have one and i have tried various Lite Codec Packs and NVIDIA packs. Given the fact that i have a PNY 6600GT graphics card with NVIDIA Forceware drivers, unsure of number, could anything be conflicting with anything else?
Is there any way i could do a registry check to see if there are any remaining files from programs i have been running / installing while attempting to fix this.
Thanks,
Peter

I would get rid of the Lite Codec Packs altogether... the only two codecs
really needed for AVI files are xVid and Divx and they can be obtained from
their own websites. When you refer to nVidia pack, are you referring to
their PureVideo DVD decoding pack.... and is it a trial or full version.

Hello Cari,
Thanks again for your response. The decoder that i was reffering to this decoder at this location: http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder.html.
At the moment i only have this and WMP installed on my machine. Other than that i only have NVIDIA drivers. If you have time i would be most grateful if you could list what i would need to do in order to get this working.
People on other forums were suggesting the complete re-install of windows etc. My last exam is next Tuesday, i'll be trying to fix this after that.
Thanks alot,
Pete

Make sure if this is the trial version of the PureVideo nVidia DVD decoders
that it has not expired.

I myself have the same problem. I have the 256mb version of the 6600GT card
on my system. I could not watch films or stream any internet videos. Since I
have upgraded motherboard, CPU but kept same grx card as its only 2 months
old and its still the same on this new upgraded system. I have wmp and Power
DVD 6 installed if I try and play a film the system CPU goes to 100% and the
system just kind of freezes. I sometimes can end it through task manager but
more often than not I end up having to press the reset button on the front of
my case. My system is as follows :-
AMD x2 3800+
ASROCK Mobo
1GB Ram
160GB HDD
256mb Geforce 6600GT 8xAGP
NEC 3540 DVD Burner
