Windows Messenger help refers to a "sign-in name" but does not explain how to
create one. I don't want people to need/have my email address to IM me, but
it seems the only way to sign into Windows Messenger is via an email address,
and no way to create a separate screen name or "sign-in name" to sign in and
that that people would use to contact you.
This seems crazy. Is it true? I MUST be missing something...

Greetings,
You are not missing anything. The only names in Messenger are your Passport e-mail address
and your display name.

you dont have to create an email, im guessing you already have one and you
can use that as your passport, but yes you need an email to make a passport
account and therefore sign into windows/msn messenger
