HDD access after running "purgecache"

I had to run sfc /purgecache because I started getting
explorer errors when I did anything on my system with XP
Pro installed. After running sfc /scannow and having to
put the Windows XP CD in, my Hard Drive is constantly
being accessed and is decreasing system performance
significantly. What went wrong? Thanks for your help.
