One of the clients I support has a Compaq EVO with a
company image of Windows XP PRO which is identical to
hundreds of other users. However, when she views a
Directory Tree in Explorer the screen constantly flashes
or flickers as though it's updating. Additionally, she
has unusually long waits to load files, particularly from
network locations. As I said, this is an image which is
identical to hundreds of machines without this problem.
It is always possible that the user shot herself in the
foot by loading something unusual, but I don't see
anything suspicious on her system. Any ideas?

Check to see if she downloaded any display drivers from the windows update
site.
I discovered lots of flickering, specially when trying to see a Movie or
anything with motion in Internet Explorer. As soon as I rolled back the
Driver for the Display all the flickering stopped. Now anytime I go to the
Update Site, I make sure that's the one Download, I don't click on.
