When i click start then shutdown computer i get the normal options to STAND
BY, TURN OFF AND RESTART. However, when i click either the restart or switch
off buttons nothing happens, the Turn Off Computer screen dissapears and
whatever was on the screen when i started the shutdown is displayed and
everything operates normally. The computer will not shutdown. If a click on
the standby button allow the computer to go into standby then reactivate the
screen uysing a mouse movement i get the option to close down the computer
and this works. The only other way to shutdown the computer appears to be by
pressing and holding the shutdown button until the computer switches off.
However this causes the computer to go through the scandisk routine when i
reboot. The computer will not restart even when the restart button is pressed
after loading new software which requires a shutdown to complete the
installation.

Any help please?

Control panel, power options, Apm tab,
Enable advanced power management support.
Reboot.
