View Full Version : Can't delete or rename long file names in Windows XP Pro

As far as I can tell from Googling this issue, Windows XP is supposed to support
long file names. However, whenever I go to delete or rename a long file (near as
I can tell, one over 80 characters in length) by right clicking on the file, an
error box comes up telling me that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem,
and will shut down. The issue I'm facing is mostly renaming mp3 files which
include more information than I want, such as artist, album name, song
title...mp3 Usually all I want in my folders are the song title. But as I say,
if I right click, and try to rename them, I get this error and can't do
anything. Any information about this? Thanks.

Your problem is with the mp3 file not Windows Explorer that is why it
crashes. I just took a mp3 file and made it 88 characters long and renamed
it in Windows Explorer down to 8 and it worked fine. I'm willing to bet this
does not happen to every long filename mp3 file that you have.
