Microsoft update not working

Microsoft windows update does not work when I try to scan
my system for updates. It does not move beyond 0%. I have
Norton Internet Security installed but have disabled this
firewall and still it does not work. I have run a
separate microsoft program that says I am missing 7
security updates including SP1 a. I have been unable to
install this service pack.
Any suggestions.
