Can you boot decently in Safe Mode? Hold the F8-key down after you start a
reboot. At the text-screen, select Safe Mode.
If you haven't seen that mode before, it will look rather strange... but if
it boots alright, that indicates either a corrupt device driver, or a
conflict between drivers.(safe mode boots with no frills, generic drivers)

This just happened to a friend of mine... the cause? She had loaded device
drivers for a soundcard she had installed, but her system was ALSO loading
device drivers for the on-board sound card (some are built-in to the
motherboard) - which she had forgotten to disable.
Once she disabled the on-board drivers... her system booted normally.
