modem will not swtch of

hi
this past week my usrobotics modem suddenly gives me the
message that it has 'encountered a problem and is
shutting down'.
it shuts down but does not disconnect and the only way I
can
reconnect to the net is by restarting my machine. The
only new program
I have installed was a critcal windows update last week.
I have tried system restore to no avail.

Go to USRobotics site and see if you can get a updated driver. Also,
disconnect the Modem from the Computer after
Shutting down. Restart without the modem and let Windows fully boot then
shutdown. Reconnect the Modem and

thanks Rich I will go onto the usrobotics site. when the
modem was installed it said xp had the driver. I cannot
switch off my modem as it is internal unless I am stupid
and there is something I can do to switch it off!
