p.c. is running real slow and freezes

I have done everything to get my p.c not to run slow or
to freeze up im running win.xp home and i cant get it to
run properly it freezes up on me or it runs real slow i
have defraged and rebooted and sys. resore what should i
do now? i was thinking about reforming hard drive but i
cant seem to make copies of whats on my hard drive befor
i do that. plz help

Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:

Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
