trouble with CD drive

XP will read data on CD in explorer but windows installer
will not run packages from the CD: but OK if I copy the
package to a hard drive.
Event viewer shows the following message


"The device number of a(n) CdRom drive cannot be
determined. This device failed to configure".

Can anyone help?

Get a can of compressed air and blow the dust out of the Cd-rom drive.
Don't use any Cd cleaners.
