HD Formats

Hi, i am considering to buy an HD Monitor to use with my computer and alternatively with my Xbox 360. There are different formats, the most popular being:

480i
480p
720p
1080i

I think the "p" stands for progressive, and the "i" stands for interlace. However, I want the best, and my Xbox 360 can support all of these formats. So can someone please instruct me on the differences between these formats and what is the best of them?
