display problems with windows xp dell lap top

Hello,

I have a Windows XP Dell Inspiron 8000 lap top. I am trying to lower
the resolution in order to make the text appear larger. Unfortunately,
when I go to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings, although I'm able to
adjust the resolution (1024 x 768 from 1600 x 1200) nothing gets
larger,. Instead there is more black space around the main viewing
area. In other words, the pixels per square inch remain unchanged.

What can I do to decrease my font resolution while also changing the
pixels per square inch?

Hello,

Try pressing Fn key + F7. That should tell the monitor to stretch 1024x768
to fill the screen.

To change the DPI go to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced ...
One of those tabs have the DPI, I can't recall what it's called, not on XP
at the moment. 8-)

To increase the text size you should decrease the resoultion. Try setting it
to 800x600 and see if it works. Moreover, the supportted resoultion is very
much depends on your Monitor size. If your VGA card supports the 1600x1200
then doesn't means that your monitor support this as well. However, Windows
XP only shows the resoultion which are supported by both. This kind of high
resolution is not recommended. On a 17" monitor we use 1024x768 or 1200x1024.
According to me the higher resolution are automatically used in 3D Games.

Not the case with laptops--in some cases trying to use a lower resolution
than native results in a smaller screen with black borders.
