View Full Version : Windows Update won't open

I'm working on a system that appeared to have a minor browser hijack. That
seemed to be fixed rather readily. There are no viruses or other parasites
after scanning, etc. with NAV, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy.

Now the sytem seems to be fine except:

Windows update won't open. I've set all the IE security settings to Default
and find no settings that are suspect. Yet, the Windows Update page won't
open.

The usual warning bar regaring scripts .asp, etc. doesn't pop up - so there
is nothing to "permit" if that's the issue.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Fred

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906602&SD=tech - How to troubleshoot
Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services
installation issues

microsoft.public.windowsupdate - Windows Update newsgroup

1) Check the hosts file for blocked entries.

2) Perhaps the box isn't as clean as you think it is.

3) Try a Repair Install.

Thanks Mike and Malke,

Well I might have said that Windows update does respond by saying that it
can't do its thing.
A normal looking page is there but its message is that there's a problem.
There is no .asp type of warning bar either.
