I want to understand what disconnecting a session does...Does it leave
something running on the remote computer, if so what kind of resource drain
does it have?

Lastly, is there a time when the disconnect session times out?

I prefer leaving users exactly were they are after I access the machine
remotely. Logging off closes all programs.

Thanks!

Disconnecting by clicking the 'X' button does that and only that. It leaves
all program s running that were running when you clicked it.

The only other thing it does is then require a password entry when the user
returns to the PC, like a screensaver P/W.

It should not leave any extra resources being used.

I frequently connect to my home PC from work. I leave it logged in under my
username, then log in remotely to the same state I left it and only
disconnect, never 'Logoff' from the remote session.
