Help! I got the RPC virus and, not knowing what the
problem was began a reinstall of Windows XP. I am getting
stuck in the set-up process with an error message that
says "Fatal Error: Setup failed to install the product
catalogs. This is a fatal error. The setup log should
contain more information."
I found an article in Microsoft's knowledge base (307153)
on when this error occurs during an upgrade to Windows
XP. I followed the instructions, but it did not fix it. I
am still getting the error message. Specifically, I went
to shift+F10 to start a command prompt. At the prompt I
typed cd\windows\system32\ and hit enter. (For some
reason it only showed "windows\system\32\:" at that
point) Anyway, I typed rename catroot2 catold and pressed
enter, then tried to continue with the reinstall, but the
problem came back.
I am not very computer literate and I can't figure out
what is going on. Any help would be appreciated.
