After the release of the KB908531 patch last week we are running into issue
with MS Office products having problems opening files, saving files, and
etc... I already have tried the fix the Microsoft posted KB918165 it has not
worked. I have also updated any HP software that is running on those PC's.
Any one have any other ideas that I could try to resolve this issue short of
removing the patch which is a workaround but does not really solve the issue.
Running W2K Sp4 with Office 2003 Sp2.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems .... Bad news is ... I'm
having them too. And I cannot figure it out. I was just wondering if you
ever figured out how to fix the problem.....

If you have a NVIDIA video adapter, download and install
the latest drivers from NVIDIA. Make sure to uninstall the
old NVIDIA drivers before installing the new drivers.

Your concerns are correct[not that often though ;-) ;-)] - MS are leaving
another rogue update to be sorted by the user!!
Thank goodness we have the Kellys et al to help the less knowledgeable.

Thank you to all who have posted solutions to my question. So far here is the
outcome. I am not using NVIDIA driver. The HP fix that was recommeneded from
Kellys-Korner website is the same fix tha Microsoft applies to the solution
for the HP software. If you open the VBS file in edit mode you will see that.
But I ran it anyway still did not work and yes I did reboot also. I work in a
Corp enviroment so we have standard hardware using IBM T30 Thinkpad and
Compaq Evo Desktops. So far the only thing that is linking all the PC's that
are having issues is the HP software for Scanners and all in one devices. Any
ideas are appreciated.

Whats the big deal about uninstalling the patch?
From what I've read a user has to jump through several hoops to have their
system exploited.

Firewall best practices and standard default firewall configurations can
help protect networks from attacks that originate outside the enterprise
perimeter. Best practices recommend that systems that are connected to the
Internet have a minimal number of ports exposed.

In a Web-based attack scenario, an attacker would have to host a Web site
that contains a Web page that is used to exploit this vulnerability. An
attacker would have no way to force users to visit a malicious Web site.
Instead, an attacker would have to persuade them to visit the Web site,
typically by getting them to click a link that takes them to the attacker's
Web site. After they click the link, they would be prompted to perform
several actions. An attack could only occur after they performed these
actions.

The vulnerability could not be exploited automatically through e-mail. For
an attack to be successful a user must open an attachment or click on a link
that is sent in an e-mail message.

This is all true but these types of malicious attacks travel through internet
port 80 trafic. That is where Spyware and Trojans anymore are attacking
computers. Users browse to websites and click on pop ups without knowing what
it does and this downloads the Spyware or Trojans into their Temp Internet
folder where if the user has Admin rights this gets activated and attacks the
system. Even in a Corporate environment there is a limitation to the security
you can provide with Firewalls. Thusly you always need to make sure your
vunerabilities are taken care off. Removing the Patch is a good work around
just not a good solution. Ultimately you have to understand the cause and fix
it.
