Hi, this was the post the I posted almost 2 dys ago:

explorer.exe seems to crash alot especially when opening folders on my
computer. I have updated windows, anti virus and windows defender and scanned
everything, but nothing seems to fix this.

I have tried searching for an answer on microsoft and found that they
reccommend downloading 'duser.dll' but when i click on the link they tell me
its unavailable!

Can anyone help me with this as the only solution I can see is to either
restore windows back a month, or to reinstall it!

p.s i am using Windows XP Pro

I had some reccomendations to clean up my pc, but i had tried all this
already(scan disk, defrag, disk clean up, manual clean up of old files,
windows defender, norton 2006 & PConPoint) also to install security update
MS06-015, but this seems not to have worked.
I found the dll file on a site that someone reccommended to me, however it
asks me to 'open file with', and I'm not sure what program to use, and when I
click use online, it comes up with a microsoft page that doesn't really help
me!

Does anyone have any more suggestions? As the only way at the moment to 'un
crash it' is to use ctl alt del and log off then log on again, as ending
program just ,makes matters worse!

Many Thanks in Advance

Hi, aroy.

> explorer.exe seems to crash alot especially when opening folders

First question: In this context, what does "crash" mean?

Second, have you run the System File Checker? At the Run prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow

SFC will compare each WinXP operating system file with the "known good" copy
held in a cache on your hard drive and replace any missing or damaged ones.
Have your WinXP CD-ROM handy; SFC probably will need to see that.

If you must reinstall WinXP, first try the In-place Upgrade, also known as a
Repair Install or simply a reinstallation. For details, see this KB
article:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315341

Use Method 2, booting from the WinXP CD. Note that you don't press "R" the
first time it is offered, in Step 3, but press Enter here and go on to Step
5 and press "R" there. The In-place upgrade reinstalls WinXP itself (and
will take as long as a clean install) but preserves your installed
applications and data - and most of your "tweaks". As soon as you get your
firewall and virus protection back in place, visit Windows Update to be sure
you have all the hotfixes you need.

If that doesn't work, please post back. Tell us exactly how to reproduce
the problem you are having. And it wouldn't hurt to throw in a basic
description of your computer.

You need to hack the registry as explained in this kb:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165

Try this vbs which does exactly what it says on the tin:

Hi,

When I say 'crash', i mean that it freezes up and won't let me click
anything at all, apart from useing ctl, alt, del.

I have tried the system file checker, and will wait a while to see if that
solved it, and will get back to let you know if it worked or if it didn't!

Many thanks for your advice.

If you know the computer is virus/malware-free and you've already done
all the software troubleshooting (SFC, Windows Update fixes, etc.) then
look to the hardware as a possible cause.

I'm having similar problems with IE6 not being able to open a favourite file
or a link when online at AOL ... all since installing the Security Update
which is apparently to be reissued on Tues 25th April. I've lost the System
Restore tool too so I might just wait patiently for next Tuesday.

However, let me know if you find a solution and how it came about, please.

Regards,

David
