I recently bought a system with XP Media Center. I am aware that I will not
be able to join a domain at work, but how could I access the network? Do I
have to type in the IP address of the server with the proper username and
password?

The easiest way is to map the network shares with the proper username and
password.
Rt-click on my computer
map network drive
set path
check reconnect at logonlick connect with a different user name
enter the username and password
click ok
click finish

If you use it to upgrade an existing install that is a Domain member it will allow you to stay in the domain.
