Windows Explorer seizes on most file manipulations

For the last month, I've had a major problem with Windows
Explorer. I can drag and drop files, but whenever I try
to manipulate one (click on menu bar, right click on
file, hilite and hit "delete" button, etc.), I get a
permanent hourglass! I dutifully send an error report
into the black hole...

I can't find a way to specifically re-install Windows
Explorer (not Internet Explorer). I would really not
like to have to reinstall XP!

Would very much appreciate any suggestions!
