View Full Version : After freeze, cannot boot computer. Please help

April 19th 06, 06:44 AM
Hello All,

I have a P4 running Xp Home edition. It was running fine until it
suddenly froze. The keyboard and mouse stopped operating and I had to
power it off.

Now it won't reboot. It appears not to have even started the boot
sequence and no message is displayed on the monitor. As I power on the
system, I just notice the fan noises. The HD light blinks once but no
attempt to boot.

The system has 1 HD, 1 DVD drive, 1 CD-RW, and a floppy. I put a floppy
into the driver to check if it would attempt to boot but it didn't even
get there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
CD

If Windows does not even attempt to start then you have a
hardware problem, not a Windows problem. Take it to your
friendly computer dealer for a quick diagnosis.

Do some hardware testing

1. Change the graphics card first since you say there is no msgs
[display ?] at power on, then test the following if nessessary
2.RAM with memtest 86 www.memtest.org
3. HDD with manufacture's diagnostic tool

Hello Roberto,

Thank you for your message.

The problem is that the computer does not even get to execute the boot
sequence. It is not just a matter that I do not get messages.
Therefore, I cannot install or run any software.

I disconnected the HD and used a boot floppy but, again, had the same
behavior.

Any clues?

Thanks
CD

Looks like either a faulty MoBo or CPU if POST doesn't execute, but
first I would rule out the things suggested in my first reply:
Try different RAM and graphics card.
