Messenger shuts down or disappears after signing in

Hi,

I don't remember changing anyting in the configuration of my computer.
Wenever I try to sign into Messenger (MSN 7.0 and MSN 7.5), after I type my
user id, password, and click on sign-in, when it seems to be ready to open up
my contacts, the window just closes. If I click on the icon in the taskbar it
disappears and nothing happens. I can re-start Messenger, re-boot the
computer, re-install messenger, and still I get the same behavior.

When I look at the event viewer I get the following message:

The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source ( Messenger ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or
message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able
to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and
Support for details. The following information is part of the event:
msnmsgr.exe, 7.5.324.0, msnmsgr.exe, 7.5.324.0, 00209a68.

I've tried using /AUXSOURCE={mycomputername} and it didn't provide any
information whatsoevever; I believe this is because I have Windows XP Home
Edition (patched through SP2).

I also added the registry keys provided by Jonathan Kay in the files
enablewindowsmessenger_user.reg and enablemessenger.reg and still get the
same behavior.

I tried running msnmsg /? but there is no option that allows me to do any
further debuggins or gives me any useful information to continue debugging.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Greetings JR,

The reg keys in question that you're trying to use are for Windows Messenger, not MSN
Messenger.

You may need to rebuild your client cache. To do so, firstly shut down Messenger if it's
running by right-clicking its icon in the
notification area and clicking Exit. Then, click Start, then Run, enter:
%appdata%\Microsoft
and click OK. Then right-click the MSN Messenger and choose Delete.
