Here’s my question: Do I need to change anything?
Here’s why I’m asking: My computer operates fine, except for a nagging
problem with Windows Explorer. Every time I insert or remove a thumb drive
and occasionally when I insert or remove a DVD or CD-ROM, my Windows Explorer
will stop and a dialog box will open on my screen which reads (without the
quote marks): “Windows Explorer has encountered a problem a needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you are in the middle of something,
the information you were working on might be lost. For more information
about this error, click here. [Close button]”
I clicked on the click here link, and another dialog box opened on top of
the first. This dialog box reads (again without the quote marks):
“Error signature
AppName: explorer.exe
Appver: 6.0.2900.2180
ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180
Offset: 00011e58
To view technical information about the error report, click here. [Close
button]”
The technical information is too long to include here, but trust me when I
write that it is also entirely gibberish.
I decided to look around on my computer and see what could be causing this
problem. I found something which I had not previously noticed.
Under Display Properties > Settings, I have two monitor icons showing (!),
even though I actually have only one monitor physically attached to my
computer. I have never had any monitors other than the one monitor which
shipped (in December 2002) with my computer attached. My computer is a Dell
Dimension 4550. The two monitor icons are labeled 1 and 2. 1 is larger than
2.
Under the two monitor icons, a drop-down box labeled “Display” has these two
entries, in this order:
1. Dell 1702FP (Digital) on 128 DDR ATI Radeon 9700 TX w/TV-Out
2. (Default Monitor) on 128 DDR ATI Radeon 9700 TX w/TV-Out
Below the box labeled “Screen Resolution” I have two check boxes. BOTH are
checked but both are also grayed out. The two check boxes are, in order:
[checked box] Use this device as the primary monitor
[checked box] Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor
My screen resolution is 1024x768 and my color quality is “Highest (32 bit)”.
Under Device Manager > Display Adapters, I have two entries (surprise!).
The two entries are, in this order:
128 DDR ATI Radeon 9700 TX w/TV-Out
128 DDR ATI Radeon 9700 TX w/TV-Out Sec
I checked the drivers for both entries. The entries for both are identical
are read:
Driver Provider: ATI Technologies, Inc.
Driver Date: 8/25/2004
Driver Version: 6.14.10.6476
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publ
Under Device Manager > Monitors, I only have one entry. The entry reads:
Dell 1702FP (Digital)
So, back to my original question: Do I need to change anything?
Specifically, should I delete that second monitor and/or secondary display
adapter entry?
