View Full Version : Restoring win98 backed up files

I have just up-graded from win98 to windows XP. I did my
back up before upgrade to a external hard drive on a fire
wire card.

After the upgrade I noticed some data was missing in a
Family Tree Maker data file.

I cannot restore the backed up files because windows xp
does not recognize QIC file extentions. Microsoft says
this is on purpose. They say to find another computer
with window98.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Hi Marty,

Yes, try the 30 day free trial of Stomp to recover the .qic backup:

Is not QIC a program backup extension? Sounds like you did not directly
copy them to the ex drive but used a program that is not xp compatible.

I backed up before the upgrade ( like a good computer
user should)but it was backed up under win98 using the
backup program that comes with the operating system. Now
I find out that winXP does not support QIC files. I
wished MS would tell people these things before an
upgrade. I would have done a simple copy to the external
drive which is larger than my internal hard drive.

It would be nice if MS was more clear about that. In the Win9x family,
using backup files from one version of msbackup when upgrading to a new
one has been a problem in the past. In this case there is also a
difference in the programs: ntbackup vs msbackup.
