Ok, Last week I updated some so-called critical updates
for my Audigy 2 PCI Card at the creative website using
their auto-detect and install program. During the
installation process I incurred two errors related to not
being able to read a memory location (0-0XXXXXXXX etc.).
I received 2 of these errors back to back and then it
finished the installation process. I rebooted to see if
there were any errors. I had sound, but use of some of
creative's applications resulted in my computer rebooting
(Crashed). Been talking with Tech Support with Creative
and we have exhausted all options and they suggest Re-
installing Windows (Yikes!)

As soon as I noticed the errors after the first reboot I
tried a system restore as I created a restore point just
prior to downloading the updates. That was unsuccessful
as was going further back in restore points. This led
me to believe I have a registry problem. Removing all
components of the drivers and software including the
removal of the PCI card itself and reinstalling results
in installation errors. My system is looking for files
which it should be getting off the CD in my Program files
folders. As a result it doesn't find these and I end up
with missing shortcuts. I have been able to successfully
install just the drivers and a diagnostic program that
came with the software. So I do have sound and all the
drivers pass testing during the diagnostic phase.
Unfortunately I can not recover the software.

All other applications on my computer run fine including
Games which really test the CPU and system stability. I
tried using system mechanics registry cleaner to no
avail. Same problems. I downloaded a better reg cleaner
call jv16 PowerTools which has RegCleaner. This program
picks up alot more entries than system mechanic, but many
creative entries are highlighted RED indicating their not
safe to erase. (Maybe this is the problem)

But, if all the components (software, drivers and PCI
Card) are removed from the PC then these registry entries
should be safe to erase eventhough their highlighted
red....I think. I feel modifying the registration is my
last hope for salvaging my system. Obviously, I will
make a copy of the registry and create restore points
prior to messing with the registry. Any help or advice
would be appreciated. I think the installation errors of
the audigy 2 software are directly related to a registry
problem. Oh yeah, by the way I tried installing under a
new user with same results. It is my understanding that
win XP keeps a log file in the registry that allows for
faster reinstalls and this could be the problem as it
continues to point for file apps on my hard drive as
opposed to getting them off the CD during the
installation process.

24 hours on troubleshooting and going.
