I got my mother a new Dell notebook and uninstalled Windows Messenger but it
keeps starting whenever anyone logs in. Older versions had an option to
uncheck to stop it from loading when logging in. And it used to be in the
windows component install. But this has neither and just keeps loading. I
haven't gone in to the registry yet to hunt it down.

Sometimes Outlook Express or an anti virus program starts Windows
Messenger. Look in OE's Tools|Options pop-up General tab for the setting
to automatically log into Windows Messenger. In the anti virus look for
an option to scan Windows Instant Messenger messages.

On my system I ended up renaming the file and creating a dummy file so
the OS wouldn't keep putting a new copy in.

Greetings,

As long as you don't mind losing Remote Assistance, Whiteboard or Application Sharing within
MSN Messenger, you can simply uninstall Windows Messenger by clicking the Start button, then
click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

XP Pro -- Is there any way to stop MSN Messenger from appearing on my
desktop whenever I start the computer? (Same goes for Roxio's Drag-to-Disc.)
