I recently upgraded from Windows ME to XP - Home Edition. XP includes
Windows Messenger 4.7 (4.7.3001), and I also have MSN Messenger, Version 7.5
(Build 7.5.0324) carried over from when I had Windows ME.
Are both messenger systems the same, and should I get rid of the MSN one?
If not, I would like to know how to uninstall the MSN one and re-install as
at present there are two icons for it in the bottom right-hand part of the
Taskbar, one with a little red circle and white x in it and the other is a
little black square. (There is also another icon for MSN on the left side of
the Taskbar as well).
I have a Dell Dimension 4100 with Windows XP - Home Edition.
Many thanks for your help.

Greetings Stewart,
The "newest" is MSN Messenger -- Windows Messenger is a relic which hasn't been updated in
years (and indeed, it's product team has been gone for a long time).
As long as you don't mind losing Remote Assistance, Whiteboard or Application Sharing within
MSN Messenger, you can simply uninstall Windows Messenger by clicking the Start button, then
click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

Windows Live Messenger is an upgrade to MSN Messenger, it has nothing to do with "Windows
Messenger".

Jonathan Kay:
Thanks for your response. I am going to leave both Messenger files intact
and use the MSN one.
This matter is now closed, and I am much appreciative of your help.

Stewart,
I also recently upgraded to a Dell with Windows Messenger installed. When I
ran MSN Messenger with Windows Messenger installed, I continually received a
message indicating that I was already signed in on another computer because
Windows Messenger runs in the background. I unchecked the properties in
Windows Messenger and I also removed Windows Messenger from my startup but
neither resolved this issue. I finally removed MSN Messenger 7.5.
Have you found a way around that? I would also like to use MSN Messenger 7.5.
Thanks!
