For some reason the main page on Windows Messenger does not appear anymore.
Therefore I can't change the status to ""offline". Consequently every time I
open Messenger I am listed as online so I have to change it manually.

Greetings Jim,

Windows Messenger does not have this feature, but MSN Messenger 7.x does. To get to it,
start up Messenger and if it automatically signs you in, right-click in the Messenger
notification area icon and choose Sign Out. Then double-click the notification area icon,
set yourself as Appear Offline for your status in the dialog and sign in again -- the setting
should stick.
